Driving through hilly valleys to Coorong National Park

More off-road driving and heading back to the ocean – Travel log no. 60

Slowly we made our way through the desert. With the passing meters also the landscape of the desert changed.

Emu, Little Desert — Chasing two Emu’s through the endless dirt-roads of Little Desert.

McDonald's Hwy, Little Desert — McDonald’s Hwy, is more a string with pools than a highway but runs straight through the desert.

Broughton's Waterhole, Little Desert — Broughton’s Waterhole marks the end of the Little Desert, for those who made it through.

From there we made it straight over the border to South Australia. Finally we made it to the State of our destination, Adelaide.

On our way back to the ocean we came through this beautiful valley during sunset.

Valley, Coorong — A beautiful valley with the sun gaping over the horizons.

We saw some eagles and animals which could be bucks or antelopes. When you think it cannot get any better you come into the next valley which greets you with an even more beautiful view.

River, Coorong — The sun slowly sets over this idyllic river without a name, somewhere in Australia.

Sun set, Coorong — A couple minutes later the sun is just a red fireball over the horizons which sets everything in a gold light.

We came over a lake with black swans and followed the Cantara Rd straight to the Ocean. There we set up camp. I was able to set up my hammock in a little shelter. Even though it was raining heavily I had an easy night of sleep.

Venturing over the dirt-roads of Little Desert

A day full of aboriginal art and driving off-road – Travel log no. 59

We began the day by exploring Aboriginal paintings on the walls of the Grampians. Since the Aboriginal culture is a spoken one, there is not much painted art out there. The art you will find may seem childish, but still has it’s stories to tell.

Grampians, Victoria — Hiking through the Grampians close to where we discovered the Aboriginal Art.

We were lucky and the sun was shining. The whole landscape felt much more desert like than the day before.

Slowly we drove westwards to our next stop, the little desert. Here we first needed the 4 Wheel-Drive of Florian’s car. The dirt-roads were feet deep full of treacherous sand. Even though it didn’t feel like a traditional desert, it was beautiful never the less.

It got dark pretty quickly and we moved slower than we expected. We had to set up our camp next to a waterhole in the middle of the desert. Without a stove we cooked our food directly in the amber of the fire. Probably the best Risotto I ever ate.

The night-sky was filled with stars while we enjoyed our dinner next to the campfire.
