Checking out the big surf on Banzai Pipeline
Snorkeling on Lanikai Beach and checking out the surf on Banzai Pipeline – Travel log no. 38
I left the hostel later than expected around noon. This kind of delayed my schedule since I am dependent on public transport now. After changing the bus two times I made it to Kailua. I hiked to the Lanikai beach which is known for good snorkeling.
The water is light blue and crystal clear. I was a little bit worried but sure enough I found some friendly people from Racine Wisconsin who were happy to take care of my things.
I saw many small nice fish and even a big eel. Unfortunately I had to head on after an hour to make it to the North Shore and the Banzai Pipeline in time for sunset.
I took me another 3 hours of riding the bus to make it up there. The bus number 55 took me directly along the ocean which was great. I really got a feeling for the tropical flora while looking out of the bus.
The wave on the Banzai Pipeline are just massive. April is the start of the big wave surfing here and already a couple of people were out.
The wave are bigger than 5 meters. One surfer got smashed and his board was washed ashore broken in twice. The power of the waves is just massive.
Another 3 hours of riding the bus and I made it back to Waikiki where I partied on the beach with my Australian friends.
Today I plan on surfing and relaxing on the beach.
