Working on a Herb Farm – WWOOFing

About the first working experience and hard decisions – Travel log no. 69

The next day we drove out to a Herb Farm out in Adelaide Hills. Florian had organized a job for accommodation for us here (WWOOFing). The drive into the Adelaide Mountains was really beautiful. The landscape changes from flat lands into hills with wine yards.

Jo and Rodger the owners of the farm were really friendly. With us there were about 10 other people from different nations who all came to the farm to get a roof and food in exchange for work.

We had lasagne all together before going to bed. The room I shared with Florian and Tobias was pretty spartanic. Nevertheless we had a good night of sleep.

The next day we got up for our 5 hours of work at 6:30 am.

Out for our first job of the day – Coriander Picking.

The picking of Coriander wasn’t physically challenging. But the cold of the morning was. Our fingers were so cold for the first our that we had to take breaks after every bushel. After the sunset the pain was gone though.

When we filled up all the containers I got send back to take over my next task. The packing of basil.

We had to put together a bushel of basil weighing in between 52-62 grams. This work was more boring since it was inside.

Last but not least our job was to pick bushels of thyme.

It was great fun to see and get a feeling for where our herbs come from. Nevertheless winter is coming and I decided to leave my friends to travel north to Darwin.

With a heavy heart I said good bye to Florian and Tobi. I met up with a Belgium guy John and an Italian Mateo with whom I will  continue to travel up North tomorrow.
