Watching some Australian Football

Watching the game of the local rivals St. Kilda vs Collingwood – Travel log no. 53

After finally having a good night of sleep I got up around 8 am. I had breakfast and went to the gym for a workout.

In the afternoon I got together with some friends to watch a live game of Australian Football.

The Australians are real sport enthusiast as far as I can say. Everybody goes to watch live games. Thats why the stadiums are build on large scale. Some of them hold more than 100k people. We went to the Etihad park to watch the game of the local rivals St. Kilda vs Collingwood. Since our hostel is in St. Kilda we all cheered for them.

The main entrance of the circled Etihad stadium.
Fans, Etihad, Melbourne
The masses of people on the way to the stadium 30 minutes prior to the game.

We got some seats in the nose-bleed section of the stadium. It’s so up high that your nose starts to bleed. Even though we could still follow the game well. Although it was hard to get the rules in the beginning. The game takes place on a circled field and is much more dynamic than American football. In addition they have 3 instead of one goal.

Collingwood, Melbourne
The ultra fans of Collingwood and goal. The ball always needs to be kicked through it. No touchdown zone.

After 4 fast quarters of 30 min the game was over and St Kilda won. We had some good burgers afterwards and went out for a drink.

I fell asleep around midnight since I will be leaving the city tomorrow to drive out West.
