Sailing to the Whitsundays

Traveling down along the shore out into the Great Barrier Reef – Travel log no. 77

After dropping off our relocation car in Cairns we decided to keep on traveling down south. While drinking at a bar in the Marina we booked a trip to the Whitsundays and Fraser. In order to get there we took another relocation from Cairns to Brisbane.

Lagoon, Cairns.
Since the water is still filled with crocodiles it is only possible to swim in the lagoon.
Ocean, Cairns
View to the ocean. Unfortunately we didn’t have the best weather during our stay.

Cairns is actually a nice city. There are many more things to do than in Darwin and it has good nightlife.

On Sunday we left to Arlie Beach to get on the boat on Monday.

I am still surprised that our camper-van made it up here.

During nightfall we finally made it to Arlie Beach.

After a short night partying with the locals we got onto the Freight Train our yacht for the next two days.

Together with a crew of 19 we sailed out to the Whitsundays.

Snorkeling, Whitesundays
A view from our first snorkel spot.

Unfortunately we didn’t have the best weather but the crew made up for it. We played some cards under deck and made new friends.

On the first day we snorkeled and did a bush hike to some aboriginal caves. Since the cyclone went over the Whitsundays beginning of the year the water is still foggy. Still we were impressed by the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef which the Whitsunday’s are part of.

The next morning we sailed out to see the highlight of the Whitsunday’s – the White Heaven Beach.

After a short hike through the bush the following view opened up:

The beach consists out of 98% silica that’s why it has it’s unique color.

Not only human’s like the shallow warm waters, we also saw lemon shark’s and sting-rays.

Back on the shores of Arlie beach we went out partying with the crew, super excited about our next trip to Fraser.
