The heart of Australia – Uluru

Exploring Australia’s biggest attraction – Uluru Rock  – Travel log no. 71

After a long day exploring the King’s Canyon we drove off to see one of the highlights of Australia. The sunset at Uluru or Ayers Rock.

We got to the sunset spot around 30 min before the actual sunset. The transition of colors was amazing. At first the rock looks orange which turns into a deep red over time.

The sun is starting to set and the color of the rock gets darker.

While watching the colors of the rock change you really get a feeling for the specialty of this place. The patterns on the rock seem to change over tim, which nearly makes it seem to be a living thing.

Group, Ayers Rock
The usual group picture in front of the rock during sunset: Caro, Stella, Nicole, I, Christina, John and Matteo

In the morning the next day we got up early again to see the sunrise. Personally I preferred the sunset, but it was a spectacular nevertheless.

Sunrise, Uluru
Sunrise at Uluru with the Olga’s to the left.

It felt more crowded on the sunrise spot and it was super cold.

In order to warm up again we did the 10 km walk around Uluru right after.

Loop, Uluru Rock
The hiking path around Uluru.

Being so close to the rock you really get a feeling for it’s dimensions. Furthermore the outside of the rock looks like elephant skin which again makes it seem alive and alien.

In some corners of the rock you can find shelter in little oasis with diverse plants and water. Aboriginal art proves the long history of the rock as a sacred place. While listening to the water running down the rock you feel more like being in a church rather than being in the middle of nowhere.

Still impressed by Uluru we moved on to see the Olga’s.
