Exploring the Airplane Boneyard on the way to Phoenix

About Twisters in the desert and old army surplus – Travel log no. 22

We started our day pretty late in Las Cruces at 12 am. I had to cover three log entries because of having no internet in the desert and the kids just like to sleep in.

On the way out to the West we saw beautiful desert landscapes, way different from what I have seen before. The only hassle was that we had two passport controls. Since my sisters passport was stolen on Key West it always takes them extra long to release us.

But the border control had some nice stories to share. Just before we came they arrested a guy who drove through the control with 120 mph claiming he was on a mission of god. When he tried to steel a truck after he crashed his car they arrested him. If you think those things only happen in video games you are wrong.

Twister, Arizona
Desert twister out somewhere along the interstate 10. We saw a couple of them. This unfortunately is about to calm down.

Finally in Tucson we went to the army base to see some old airplanes. When we got there we realized that the place was shut down for public. Luckily we met a electrician with a cherry picker who gave me a lift to take some pictures.

Old Air-force machines waiting to be reactivated, at least that’s how it looks like. But maybe the army is just not big into recycling.

We got lucky again because Bob offered to host us in Phoenix. He is a professional photographer and we shared some stories and experiences over a couple of beers.

Thanks to him we pretty much have our trip figured out for today. We will be going up North by the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell. Can’t wait to swim in there again.
