Passing through San Antonio on the way to the no man’s land
Driving into the Big Bend National Park – Travel log no. 19
I got up 5 am in the morning and drove off West. My today’s goals was Terlingua. That is an old mining town in the Big Bend National Park on the borders of Mexico. I had a 10 hours ride in front of me and due to the time change I lost another hour which didn’t make it easier.
On the way down there I stopped in San Antonio. Unfortunately it was cloudy the whole time. At least I was probably the only tourist outside the homeless walking the riverwalk.
After an hour of exploring the city I continued my drive. At some point I left the hilly land and suddenly the clouds were gone and I was in the desert.
I made a final stop in Alpine to get gas and some BBQ. There is only one gas station in the park which some times runs out of gas. So you really want to make sure to fill up before driving out there.
The drive to my host was a real adventure. Since the house is not on the maps he gave me directions by miles and turns to take. On the way out there in the middle of the desert I took this picture of the sunset, you can see it as a title picture.
When I already thought I took the turn on the wrong dirt road, suddenly the cabin appeared on the mountain side.
We met up on the construction side. My host Manu is constructing the house for Mike who is a ranger of the park. After a couple of Lone Star’s, telling jokes and stories we had BBQ and a Bonfire.
The view from his place on the Chisos mountains is just gorgeous. Can’t wait to write about my time in the park.
