Checking out the beautiful Azalea’s on the way to Savannah
Spring has finally arrived – Azalea plants in full bloom – Travel log no. 9
Back on the road again the weather seemed finally promising enough to actually drive top down. It was still pretty cold on the Interstate, but nothing which could be compensated by heating cranked up high. After 4 hours of driving I finally made it to South Carolina. I was already running on fumes, but 40 cents cheaper gas was definitely worth the risk.
On the interstate I saw many containers from Hamburg Süd loaded on the Semi trucks. I felt home sick for a little bit, but it was good to see where these end up. Savannah and Charleston have two of the biggest container shipping harbors in the US. After another hour of driving I made it to the Magnolia Plantation in Charleston. You can see a picture of it as a title picture. Unfortunately I only had little time, so I had to rush through it. Fortunately I came at the right point of time. The azalea’s which only bloom 3 weeks in the year were in full bloom. Again pretty early this year because of the mild winter. You can see some pictures of these plants below. I am usually not a real flower guy and I originally came to see alligators which I didn’t, but I was still impressed by the beauty.
I was suppose to meet up with my host at 4pm in Savannah, by the time I left the plantation it was already 4 pm but still a 2 hours ride. I didn’t even discovered downtown Charleston yet. Germans and time management. So I still went downtown for a short drive through the french quarter. It was really a shame that I didn’t plan on more time. Charleston has a beautiful old downtown. It is a cool mix of Southern and a New England atmosphere.
Finally I made it to Savannah at 8 pm. We checked out the downtown area at night and I took a picture of the famous fountain.
I am excited to check out the city during day time today and again I am lucky. The Azalea here are in full bloom also. A month earlier than usually so I get to see them today too. Later today I will make it to Orlando Florida, the weather is great and I can finally work on my taint.
