Alice Springs and West MacDonnell

About life in the desert and deep gorges – Travel log no. 73

After some adventurous days out at the Uluru – Kata Tjuta State Park we drove on to Alice Springs.

The desert became even dryer and the countryside a little bit hilly. With sunset we drove into the city.

And the rising moon on the other side soon after.

Our first night in Alice Springs we used to resupply and going out for dinner. Since it was the first time in a while eating Italian food not cooked on a gas stove it felt really special.

The next day we drove out into the West MacDonnell Valley close to Alice Springs. The red rock mountain ranges really reminded me of Flagstaff in Arizona.

Gorge, West MacDonnell
At first we checked out a really narrow gorge.

After hiking from the gorge to the outlook we drove to an even bigger gorge.

Gorge, Alice Springs
Water and erosion carved this gorge long time ago.

Nowadays these gorges are inhabited by special species the Black-Eared Rock Wallabies. We were lucky to see them, but unfortunately they were too far away to take proper photos.

At night we had a great BBQ at the hostel of Stella. Afterwards we went downtown Alice Springs to check out the night life. Surprisingly we found a really cool bar, a little “Oasis” in the middle of the desert.

Montes, Alice Springs
Montes Lounge is a open bar designed like a circus.

Outside that the town more felt like a small village. In Alice Springs I saw great amounts of Aboriginals for the first time. They seem to enjoy their life in company while sitting in parks and in the streets. The main street offered some nice bars and restaurants, but overall we felt like moving on towards our destination Darwin. Sadly we had to leave the girls behind who had to drive back to Adelaide.

After an adventurous time seeing great place and making friends our ways parted and we drove off North.
