Through the outback to Kings’ Canyon

From endless green plains to red sand deserts  – Travel log no. 70

Our trip started pretty easy. Around 9 am I got together with John and Matteo in Adelaide. We bought supplies at Aldi and around 4pm we had already passed Port Augusta.

Suddenly the unexpected happened – one of our tires blew off.

Flat tire, Australia
The worst thing to happen being in the middle of the outback. At least John had a spare tire.

Luckily we were not too far away from Port Augusta. So the next day we were able to buy two more tires. For the night we just camped were we stranded.

Outback, South Territory.
Campfire and the first sunset in the outback.

We kept on driving the next day. The landscape didn’t change at all. Just passing through endless plains.

Plains, South Australia
Endless plains and a mountain range on the horizon.
Salt Lake, South Australia
Sometimes the plains would open up into giant canyons with pink salt lakes.

We passed through a city called Coober Pedy build under the ground. The second night we met 4 girls from Germany and we decided to travel together up to Alice Springs.

Cockatoo, South Australia
A swarm of Cockatoo’s taking off on the second camping place.
Desert, South Australia
The Landscape got more and more dry, but overall I expected to see red sand only which wasn’t the case.

It rained a lot the previous month, so the landscape was actually more green than usually.

After 2000 km we made it to the King’s Canyon and camped close by.

Sunset, King's Canyon
Sunset close to King’s Canyon. Can you see the Dingo escaping into the plains?

In the morning I got up early to see the sunrise from atop a little mountain.

Sun, South Australia
The sun is slowly advancing and lighting up the plains.

After the sunrise we got to the King’s Canyon and hiked along the rim.

Rim, King's Canyon
We got to the rim after climbing for an hour.
King's Canyon, South Australia
The view from a top. It is not comparable to the Grand Canyon by size but beautiful in it’s own way.
Caro, King's Canyon

Garden Of Eden, King's Canyon
Eventually we got into the Garden of Eden. A secret place of the Aboriginals.

The hike was long but definitely worth the effort. At the end you get rewarded by the view on the colorful side of the canyon. The top looks like a collection of honeycombs. The diversity of the colors is just amazing.

We had a really good time and I feel like I made good friends. I am excited for the next day exploring one of the most famous spots of Australia – Ayers Rock.
